Women’s Mental Health

“Research on women’s mental health is a relatively young field. McLean understands this is an area that deserves its own focus. McLean’s expertise is what inspired us to start the Women’s Mental Health Leadership Council in 2016. Together, we hope to increase awareness of mental illness in women, and address the stigma that often accompanies it.”

“Mental illness affects most families in some way—ours included. Therapy is one way to fight mental illness. Philanthropy is another.”

McLean Hospital doesn’t approach mental illness as a monolithic disease. There are many different types and they affect different people in different ways, including across genders. We decided to direct our gift to McLean’s Women’s Mental Health Psychiatry Fellowship because it trains psychiatrists in the unique ways that women and girls experience mental illness. And once trained, these fellows have an amplifying effect at McLean and beyond.

McLean established a Division of Women’s Mental Health to focus and direct our clinical, research, and training activities to accelerate innovation in this important area.

The Division offers resources to all clinical programs across the hospital to provide guidance on conditions that uniquely affect women and girls.
